How to Connect Your Phone to Alexa for Setup and Music

Choose the connection according to what you want the phone to do. Use the Alexa app to set up and manage an Echo. Use Bluetooth when the goal is to hear phone audio through its speaker. For the pairing steps and playback checks, see our guide to using an Echo as a Bluetooth speaker. If you simply want Alexa on the handset, the mobile app is the starting point and an Echo is optional.

For a new Echo, start in the app

Sign in to the Alexa app with the account you intend to use. Use Devices and its add-device flow, select the Echo model and follow the Wi-Fi setup prompts. A phone that already plays music through the speaker may still be signed into a different Amazon account. Check the account before repeating setup.

Decide which job you want the phone to do. Setting up a new Echo registers and connects the Echo. Playing the audio of a podcast already open on your phone uses a Bluetooth audio connection. Being signed into the Alexa app does not by itself make the phone’s current sound come out of the speaker.

For an existing Echo, check its identity

Look in Devices for the specific room name. If two speakers share similar names, change the volume on the intended one at a quiet moment and check which responds. Avoid resetting someone else’s registered speaker just because it appears in your phone’s Bluetooth scan.

Check the room and device name before changing anything. If the kitchen Echo works but the app shows an older Echo Dot, identify the speaker by asking it a simple question while standing beside it. Match that physical device to the entry you are managing.

For music, pair an audio connection

Choose the Echo in Devices, open device settings, then Bluetooth Devices and Pair A New Device. Follow the prompts with Bluetooth active on the phone. Afterwards select the Echo in the phone’s playback controls. App control and media output are independent: being able to adjust a speaker in Devices does not automatically send a podcast there.

For the documented details, see Amazon’s Bluetooth instructions.

Use a podcast or song you can pause on the phone. Select the Echo as the audio output and press play. If you hear the phone speaker, the app is still using another output. If you hear the Echo but the level is very low, check volume at both ends before deleting the pairing.

If setup stalls before Wi-Fi is connected

Note the exact stage: finding the Echo, choosing the network or finishing registration. Check that the app has the permissions it requests for nearby-device discovery. Verify the network name rather than assuming that a similarly named guest network uses the same password. Make one change at a time so you can tell what allowed setup to proceed.

If the phone finds the wrong speaker

Move near the intended Echo, stop audio on other connected speakers and use a recognisable device name. A stored Bluetooth entry proves that the devices paired previously, not that they are connected now. Select the destination again and listen to a short sample.

Hand the speaker back after listening

Pause the track before disconnecting, then return the phone’s output to its own speaker or headphones. This avoids unexpectedly playing a call or the next video into the room. The next time you need music, reconnect the existing pairing before trying to set up the Echo again.

Common questions

Do I need an Echo to try the app?

No. Supported mobile Alexa features can work on the phone.

Does Bluetooth configure Wi-Fi?

No. Follow the Echo setup prompts separately.

Should I reset an Echo missing from the app?

Check account and registration first.

Why do my headphones still play?

Select the Echo as the phone’s active audio output.
